Avenir

The typeface Avenir was created in 1987 by Swiss typeface designer, Adrian Frutiger. The word Avenir is French for "future,” which alludes to a former typeface and inspiration Futura. Frutiger took inspiration from the geometric styles of the san serif typefaces developed in the 1920s and brought in a more organic interpretation. The typeface recalls more traditional styles with the two-story 'a' and optically corrected circles for the ‘o.’ Historically the typefaces in this category were based on the models of sign painting and nineteenth-century serif typefaces, that favored simple geometric forms. By simplifying each of the letterforms into a geometric shape, designers were able to incorporate a modern update to traditional typefaces that aligned with the movements in the early twentieth century. One of the most notable uses for Avenir is the city of Amsterdam uses the font as the principal typeface in its corporate identity.

The typeface belongs to the humanist san serif category that aims to provide a modern font that marries years of development and change in typeface design while still paying homage to the foundation on which it’s built. It is clean, simple, and yet, still embodies some of the nuances found in a traditional typeface. Similar to the Futura typeface, the Avenir typeface speaks to an era in time when the world advocated for a rational, functional, and modern approach while taking it a step further to incorporate a human touch into a rigid digital landscape.
